The first and only other biography of Hamlin Garland was published more than forty years ago; since then, letters, manuscripts, and family memoirs have surfaced to provide, along with changing literary scholarship, a more evaluative and critical interpretation of Garland's life and times. Hamlin Garland: A Life is an exploration of Garland's contributions to American literary culture and places his work within the artistic context of its time.

In A monument to the country. Official statistics in Belgium, 1795-1870, Nele Bracke unravels why and how the Belgian state and its predecessors organized and developed an official statistical apparatus in order to collect numerical information. The study captures the underlying objectives and structures, as well as the methods to compile statistics. Nele Bracke investigates the meaning and significance of government statistics in the 19th-century State and society. In Belgium, early social scientists established an internationally renowned ‘statistical system’ designed to collect information about the country, the people and the society. This ‘statistical system’ was built around the ‘Commission centrale de Statistique’ (statistical committee) and the production of demographic, economic and agricultural censuses. In the first part of the book, the author analyses the institutional history of the ‘Commission centrale de Statistique’ and its predecessors. In the second part of the book, she studies the censuses.

Si la production cartographique se diversifie au cours des xviie et xixe siècles, les usages des cartes font de même : usages administratifs, savants, mais aussi démonstratifs, rhétoriques, etc., les uns n'excluant évidemment pas les autres. C'est en traitant de front les opérations techniques de production des cartes et les pratiques de leur consultation que les auteurs de cet ouvrage proposent d'aborder l'histoire de la cartographie. Cette approche pragmatique permet de se démarquer du « paradigme empirique » de l'histoire de la cartographie. Elle souligne qu'une carte offre des images du territoire variables selon la communauté d'usagers à qui elle est destinée.

Dirk Hempel opens his study with an overview of the development of literary societies in Germany, but also in other European countries and in the USA, basing his survey on recent theories from the historical and social sciences on the democratic social phenomenon of the association. In addition, he presents the first typology of the different forms of literary society. The main body of the study is devoted to an examination of numerous literary societies in 19th century Dresden. He enquires into their organisation and active members and the contents of the societies' activities.
